Who I am
Who I am matters
✩ Describe where you come from ✩
The statement “describe where you come from” is a rather complex topic for me. As an immigrant who moved to the U.S. from South Africa, I am always found stumped when people ask me this. I don’t want to slip away from my country or culture, but the place that molded me into who I am today would definitely be the city of Los Angeles.
✩ Tell me where you're going ✩
If I'm being entirely honest I couldn’t even tell you what I’m doing tomorrow, when I envision my future at this moment my mind draws a blank. I would consider myself a pretty creative person and would love to pursue something in that field, but right now I am in a pretty unclear position in my life.
✩ Tell me how you plan to get there ✩
As a current transfer student, who spent the last 12 months on a gap year I was introduced to a plethora of new opportunities and personal discoveries. Now that I have a better understanding of college and what I want out of the next 2 years. I hope that USC will inspire me and put me on the right path to figure out what I want to do career wise.
✩ How are you LIKE your parents ✩
My parents and I are very similar in the sense that we are very motivated and give our 100% in everything that we do. I was always taught to never do anything halfway, and that's something that has stuck with me my entire adolescence.
✩ How are you UNLIKE your parents ✩
As much as I would like to be an emotional person, that is one trait I didn’t inherit from my parents. They are very communicative and in touch with their feelings, but I am not. I am unfortunately the opposite of that.
✩ Connecting with the ANIMAL WORLD: What wild animal do you feel a special connection with, and why? ✩
Growing up I spent a lot of time on Safaris with my family, and I was always particularly drawn to Elephants. They are so calm and laid back in their demeanor and I often aspire to be that level of chill.
✩ Connecting with the NATURE KINGDOMS: Describe a significant childhood encounter with a tree or plant. ✩
One of my earliest memories was camping with family in the Redwood National Parks. As a 5 year old girl I obviously believed in fairies, I vividly remember staring up and down at this gigantus tree, glowing red in the sunlight. I spent the rest of that trip sitting next to that tree, desperately hoping a fairy would come out.

Hey Sophia! I love how you wrote about your friend Emma as your role model. When I read that prompt, I first thought was to choose a "celebrity" or someone of that influence. Your response reminded me that the people who impact us most are often those who are closest to us.
ReplyDeleteHey Sophia. I can definitely relate to being unsure as to what the plan is for tomorrow. Luckily we've got some time to figure out what exactly that is going to be. Hopefully you find something creative you can enjoy.
ReplyDeleteHey Sophia! I understand the struggle of immigrating. I immigrated from India myself when I was 9 and it really is an identity struggle to not lose aspects of your former country.
ReplyDeleteHey Sophia! I really liked your story about the Redwoods. I've always loved that park and how beautiful it is.
ReplyDeleteHey Sophia! I related a lot to your first paragraph as I also struggle to answer the question. Growing up influenced by different locations and cultures, I learned to love learning about cultures and languages which was a huge plus!
ReplyDeleteHey Sophia. It's great to hear about your journey moving to the US and adjusting to new life at USC
ReplyDeleteHey Sophia. It is so cool that you went on safaris with your family!
ReplyDeleteHey Sophia, I feel the same way anyone asks me where I am from, being a part of different cultures can be quite confusing but ultimately rewarding!
