Book 1 Post 2

The book I am currently reading is “ American Like Me” by America Ferrara. It is a plethora of stories and experiences from notable figures and celebrities. If I am being honest, my first impression of the book was different from my understanding of it now. Initially I thought it was going to be more lighthearted, but as I continued to read I realized there was a lot more depth and integration of serious topics. She poses a lot of serious questions about the prejudice and stigma around immigrants.

As an immigrant, I thought I was going to relate to the stories a lot more, because I found assimilating here really difficult. My parents gave up everything for me so that I could be successful and get me to where I am today. However, this book really made me reflect on how lucky I am, and how different everyone’s stories are, even if we think we share similar experiences.

I honestly would recommend this book to anyone, not only was it a really good and easy read. It was also really interesting and made me question a lot of my initial thoughts I had from my own childhood growing up as an immigrant. I also think this book is a great starting point for conversations that need to be held. There is a long history of racism and exclusion in this country around immigrants, and this book helps us understand and learn from unique individuals' experiences.

  8. Hey Sophia, I guess the term immigrant has never been one that I've used to think of myself. But I definitely am and realising that there are very different circumstances for immigration, and acknowledging how lucky we may be is very important.
