Random Thoughts Pt: 1

American? Like Me?

At first I was intrigued to choose a book outside of the options you provided for us, but I particularly resonated with the excerpt from “American Like Me” by America Ferrera. As an immigrant from South Africa, I found it really difficult to assimilate to life here. The cultural differences seemed so vast and out of place to me as a child. I was constantly going back and forth from the U.S. to South Africa, living my life in between two countries and two very different environments. However, I was so grateful to have grown up this way because it gave me such a global perspective on life. These are the reasons why I chose to start reading this book.

To be quite honest, I am only on the first 20ish pages, but I honestly enjoy it alot so far. I am a really picky reader in the sense that I will know if I like a book or not within the first five pages. I am really glad that this is an easy read because I can relate and I really like her writing style so far. The U.S. is a plethora of different cultures and experiences, but I somehow find myself relating so closely to these unique and individual stories. Growing up I always felt so alone in my experience, and this book is helping me heal my inner child so far.
